ITER : International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.
It is the reactor, having a nuclear fusion of Deuterium (H-2) and Tritium (H-3) at more than 100 Million Kelvin.
Hard to understand?
Nuclear fusion is the way the "Sun" produce energy.
If you knew that there's no oxygen in the Sun, you'll notice that the Sun is not actually burning, right?
So in short,
ITER is trying to make an "artificial sun" on the Earth.
Why do they have to?
This is because of the sense of energy crisis.
Scientific analysis tells that petroleum oil will be exhausted in 40 years.
They say, "We need a new source of energy."
This extremely huge project began on 1985,
between USA and USSR(currently Russia) as a symbol of peace after the cold war.
then EU, Japan, Korea and China joined lately.
But because of many obstacles,
especially the POLITICS,
the project is stagnated.
Japan wants to invite reactor at Rokkasho, Aomori,
supported by US and Korea.
While EU wants to invite at Cadarache, Southern France.
China and Russia supports this.
Here again.
Politicians are really hard to move.
Another problem: cost.
It is estimated that total operation cost is 12 Billion US Dollars,
construction cost for the reactor is 5 Billion US Dollars,
takes 30 years for construction and operation.
With this reason,
USA had evacuated from this project on 1999.
Stop thinking only of the present!
There are only two choices for human being after the petroleum will be exhausted.
- Reduce the energy consumption, and lower the standard of living.
- Find another source of energy.
If you studied the history, psychology or whatever,
you know that once people knew the luxurious life,
it's very difficult to go back.
No way, but to choose the choice 2.
Warning:
Nuclear energy is extremely dangerous.
So why do I support for ITER?
It's because I know that anyway people's desire will have the control.
But with one condition:
Never forget to control the risk.
Earth is not a planet only for human race.
